The ring shows the rest of the world what they have

These are just a few questions that can make a man feel very overwhelmed. I know when I was searching for an engagement ring for my wife, I was a nervous wreck. Not only because of what the ring would symbolize, but that's a lot of money to spend on something you're not sure the other person will really like. For some men, the pressure of getting all of this right is enough to either delay buying a ring or not getting one at all.

I have had conversations with several women that say that it doesn't matter what the ring looks like. It's the commitment that they are looking for. Some seem sincere while others are lying through their teeth.

My wife said that on a scale of 1-10, she will give the importance of the ring itself maybe a 4, simply because it is not only a physical symbol of the love and intention to marry but also it's sort of a down payment on the wedding, for the man, because it's like, help, I already spent x-amount on the ring, I might as well go for the whole enchilada!! But on the other hand I think that love and trust and everything like that are more important in a relationship than anything physical could ever be, and that in a truly great relationship where the couple is meant to be together, things like diamonds and wedding gowns shouldn't make a difference in whether they want to get married and be together forever.

On the other hand, it shows PROOF that you really care as others may say. Not just words. That you really DO intend to marry her. And it's a custom that goes back many years. It's the way things are and if she didn't get one - she may feel deprived or that you didn't care enough to give her one.

The engagement ring is optional but not a necessity. I personally don't think it's anything that you have to have. However, most women do tend to fall in love with the idea of having some bling bling to show off to other people, women get carried away by planning a big extravagant wedding and buying the perfect wedding gown.

Regardless, you will probably present the engagement ring to your potential fiancie when you propose and hence the engagement ring you present will take on deep personal significance for both you and your fiancie. This significance is independent of the metal, stone, or cost of the ring. Your engagement ring will carry profound sentiment that can last your lifetime and beyond.
